Volunteer firefighter tax exemption stopped

Kenbridge Town Council has done away with the two-vehicle tax exemption for volunteer firefighters.

“The point of this is not to raise money, it is to make things simpler,” council member Ken Blackburn said at the Oct. 20 meeting where the vote was taken. “I know from a book keeping standpoint it is easier not to have exceptions.

The decision came when the board abandoned requiring residents to buy town stickers for their vehicles.

The town had required residents to come in and buy stickers, but council changed the ordinance to allow the charge to just appear on the tax bill. Beginning next year, the fee will be split on everyone’s June and December tax bill.
