Central’s varsity girls and boys basketball seasons end in conference semifinals

Central High School’s varsity girls and boys basketball teams fell in the Conference 42 tournament semifinals Wednesday night against their counterparts from host Mathews High School.

The No. 3 Lady Chargers lost 47-25 to the No. 2 Lady Blue Devils, though Central trailed only 20-17 at halftime.

“Mathews’ 1-3-1 zone kicked it up a notch in the second half,” Lady Chargers Head Coach Scott Wilson said.

Senior forward/guard Dominique Turman-Watson led Central with seven points.

The Lady Chargers finish the 2016-17 season with a record of 9-11.

For the boys, the No. 5 Chargers lost 68-56 to the No. 1 Blue Devils.

“Our team gave it their best effort,” Chargers Head Coach Mike McGrath said. “Mathews had a(n) 8-0 run to start (the) third quarter. That was tough to overcome.”

Junior guard L.J. Watson led Central with 31 points.

The Chargers finish their 2016-17 campaign with a 6-17 record.
