Rites Held For William Alexander Smith

William Alexander Smith, affectionately known as “Billy” was born September 3, 1949, in Lunenburg County, Virginia. He received his education in the public schools of Lunenburg County. At an early age, he was baptized and became a member of Friendship Baptist Church, Kenbridge. Billy departed this life on Tuesday, March 28, 2017, at MCV Hospital in Richmond. He was preceded in death by his father, William Smith and a brother, Jerome Smith.

Billy was a people person who never knew a stranger. He had a generous heart and was always sharing a joke or bringing laughter to the conversation. Billy enjoyed fishing and hunting. He had a deep passion and love for playing baseball. He played ball with the Mount Zion baseball team, which he often reminisced about on a frequent basis to family and friends.

His survivors include his son, Ted L. Smith, of Meredithville, one step-daughter, De’Relle Edler (Gregory), of Surry, one step-grandson, Darius Edler, of Surry, a loving and devoted mother, Viola Johnson Smith, one brother, John Arthur Smith (Maelena), of Kenbridge, one sister, LaVerne S. Jolly (Leroy), of Freeman, four aunts, Sarah Johnson, Luevenia Jackson, Gladys Mingo, and Dorothy Hatchett, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
