Kindness

Kindness is defined as an attitude or action that benefits another. It is something that is directed toward others, enjoyed by others and builds up others. Kindness is also an intentional effort to pursue what is good for another person. I always enjoy watching Carsten and Ava being kind to one another. When that abnormal event occurs (ha ha), I notice that there is a noticeable sacrifice that takes place. In kindness, it requires giving of what one has to help the other. A free, no strings attached, here you go, kind of kindness; with no expectation of getting anything in return. As adults we are kind, however, most often we freely give, because we figure we will eventually get something in return. Or at least, we hope so. Sacrificing, giving to those who may not “deserve” it, is one of the hardest things we do. But, when we do it, God’s spirit rejoices in it, and we feel/know we did the right/holy thing. Most likely, we will never miss that which we have given away, we may even forget about the gesture or event hours or days later … but it may just stay with the “other” you were kind to … for the rest of their lives. Reflect on those who have been kind to you over the years, even though they didn’t “have” to. How has it affected you? Make a list. Express those feelings. It may just help you as you strive to bear more fruit called kindness. Tim Beck is pastor of Kenbridge United Methodist Church. His email address is revtimbeck@ gmail.com.
