A 24-year-old Victoria man was convicted Feb. 20 of a felony hit and run with five years in prison with all suspended except six months in jail.

According to Lunenburg County Commonwealth’s Attorney Robert Clement, the incident leading to Johnaton J. Vaughan’s arrest arose on May 27, 2017 in the Town of Victoria at the intersection of West Sixth Street and Main Street. Evidence showed that Vaughan was driving a red pickup truck when he ran into the back of a Chevrolet S10 pickup at the stop sign driven by a local woman and caused damage in the amount of $1,711. She got out and went up to Vaughan, but he denied hitting her and would not get out of the truck. He made a u-turn and drove away, but not before the woman got his license plate number.

“Officer Daniel Medlin of the Victoria Police Department went to Vaughan’s residence which was at 1603 Lunenburg Ave. and found the truck with some front end damage,” officials said in a press release. “He felt the hood and noticed that it was still warm. When Vaughan came to the door, he said the truck had not been driven for hours.”

The release cited that he then said he did not hit that woman in the truck, using derogatory language about her, before Medlin had stated anything about the other driver or her vehicle. “Vaughan then became verbally abusive toward the officer. He was placed under arrest,” officials said in the release. “Vaughan has a prior criminal record including a conviction of driving under the influence in Prince Edward County in 2016, a drunk in public conviction in Richmond in 2017, an Assault and Battery of a Family Member in 2017 and Violation of Probation.”

He said in addition to his sentence and fine, Vaughan must be of good behavior for five years, complete supervised probation for one year, complete substance-abuse counseling, abstain from alcohol and illegal drugs, loss of driver’s license for six months, and submit to warrantless searches and seizures.
