Central High School’s varsity football team struggled with turnovers and penalties Friday night in Charlotte Court House, but the Chargers overcame that with timely plays on offense and defense to spoil host Randolph-Henry High School’s homecoming game via a 32-12 victory.

The Chargers benefited from outstanding defense by senior linebacker T’zion Wilkerson and strong running by senior running backs Daequan “Lee Man Lee” Lee and Darien Jones.

“We had some good runs, we had some long runs,” Central Head Coach Will Thomas said, noting what went right enough for his team to win. “We were good enough to get it done.”

The Statesmen rallied in the fourth quarter, closing the gap on the scoreboard to 25-12 and then recovering an onside kick, but Central’s defense held strong, and when the Chargers regained possession of the ball, Lee capped the resulting drive with a 40-yard touchdown run at the two-minute mark.

The triumph took the Chargers’ overall record this season to 3-3. They visit Amelia County High School (3-2) next Friday at 7 p.m.
